La vierge folle

There were a couple of pertinent questions in the commentaries to yesterday's post so I am revisiting it. The work is by a Belgian sculptor called Rick Wouters, was finished in 1912 and has two alternative titles: 'The crazy dancer' and, my favourite, 'The crazy virgin'. The model is Wouters' wife, Nel, who based the pose on a figure by the famous dancer Isadora Duncan. The statue is part of the Musée en Plein Air (Open-Air Museum) of the University of Liège. Now that you know everything about this work, here's a side view.

PS: At the opposite end of the cultural spectrum, Standard Liège are playing against Anderlecht tonight for the Belgian League. It's the second leg of a final play-off, whoever wins, wins the League. I'll let you know how it went.

Ah, I thought there was something Duncanesque about that pose.
