Lacquements

Yesterday I wrote about lacquements, the local specialty that is very much on offer during the October Fair. Here are a couple of pictures of a lacquement. Notice the copious amounts of syrup covering them.

Christmas food

The Christmas Village opened this weekend. As usual, its main function is to provide culinary delights that can usually be obtained cheaper and better elsewhere. But it looks good!

Here's some closeups: Boulets (meatballs in a mushroom, onion and tomato sauce),

and Tartiflette (potato, bacon strips and Reblochon cheese)

Village Côte d'Or

This weekend there was a chocolate village in the Place Saint Lambert to celebrate the 125 years of a well known chocolate producer. The highlight was an elephant sculpted out of chocolate. That's a lot of chocolate.

I hope you won't think that this photo is too much of a cliché. If you do, remember that some clichés have become cliché because they are true. Here is a tub of chips in its natural environment. Yet another reason for moving to Belgium. The sauce is mayonnaise. Exactly what John Travolta said in Pulp Fiction although in the Netherlands they also eat chips with peanut butter (they call it pindakaas, peanut cheese)...

Here's one of the reasons why people should consider moving to Liège:

This is the four fourths waffle, so called because it contains equal weights of egg, flour, sugar and milk. Believe me, it's good.

Les retrouvailles

This weekend Liege was awash with activities and events. One of them was 'Les retrouvailles', a kind of freshers' fair for the entire city. Most non-profit associations, societies, charities, NGOs etc of the city had stalls and presented their activities. The epicentre of the fair was the Museum of Modern Art.

The rest of the stalls were spread out in the Boverie park.

There were at least two stages for performances, demonstrations and mini-concerts, including the worst ever rendition of 'Je ne regrette rien'.

As this was an authentic Liege event, food and drink were plentiful. We tried the mushroom on toast, which was excellent. In fact, it was more like toast buried under a mountain of mushrooms.
