Last ever sunrise

Sorry for the long absence, I spent a month travelling the world. I am now back in Liège, just in time for tomorrow's end of the world event. Here is a photo of today's sunrise, the last one ever (according to some people at least).

Mnema

The old Liège community swimming pool building is slowly being transformed into Mnema, a cultural centre, documentation centre, research centre, etc for the city. God knows what will eventually come out of it. For the moment it doesn't even have a roof.

Sunrises can be breathtaking in autumnal Liège.

The birds

The last few migrating birds are leaving the city ahead of the coming of winter. They are indulging themselves in their traditional flocking dance. Happy Skywatch!

Sculptures by Alfredo Longo made from aluminium cans, exposed in the Ancienne Halle aux Viandes de Liège. I normally dislike art with a message but these are actually quite nice.

Mediacité from the sky

The newest shopping centre in Liège was designed and built in the form of a snake. You can just about guess its snake-like form from this aerial photo.

Cité Administrative from the sky

An aerial photo of the city centre. The prominent tower is the Cité Administrative, something like a Town Hall. Not only is it the ugliest building in the city, it's also a bureaucratic hell on earth. The red building just behind it is the Curtius Museum and the church with the twin towers is St Bartholomew's. On the bottom left you can see the corner of the Palais des Princes Eveques and the Place Saint Lambert.

The B52 building of the University of Liège Sart Tilman campus seen from the sky. It's one of the buildings of the Faculty of Applied Sciences.

Standard de Liège from the sky

The home of the Standard de Liège seen from the sky. Unfortunately, so far this year their performances have been anything but sky high. Does it count as a Skywatch photo?

ArcelorMittal from the sky

One of the ArcelorMittal steel foundries in the Liège area seen from above. It looks even more chaotic than from ground level. These factories are the last vestiges of a previously vibrant heavy industry and their future is pretty uncertain.

Me in the sky

If you zoom into the centre of the photo, you will see a tiny airplane silhouetted against the clouds. I'm in there! Good excuse for a Skywatch.

One more aerial photo, showing the Meuse river with Outremeuse in the middle. You can also see the Albert Bridge and Pont de Fragnée, the church Saint Jacques and the Palais des Congrès.

Liège from the sky

For my birthday I was offered a flight in a light aircraft over Liège. I took plenty of photos that I will be posting over the next few days. My camera is not suited to this type of photography and the light conditions were not ideal (not to mention the shot stability) but I hope that you will like some of them. I'll start with a couple of shots of the city centre and Outremeuse. All the photos are taken from an altitude of around 2000ft (610m).

Open air ants

An open air inflatable sculpture exhibition has been running in the city throughout the summer. This is the least ugly piece, it reflects the light quite nicely. Pity about the ants.
