Les fonds baptismaux

A photo of the Baptismal font in St Bartholomew's church. It dates from the early 12th century and you can read lots of information about it here.

One more snowy shot

The snow started to melt but the weather forecast predicts more snowfall for tomorrow morning. I believe it is fitting that I should post yet another photograph of Liège in the snow. This one features the St Croix church quite prominently, I daresay (I've been watching Downton Abbey).

Still white

No snow today but it's bitterly cold and the snow has stayed on the rooftops and pavements. That does not make a difference to the recently renovated opera, it's white anyway. The former church of St Andrew looks quite atmospheric though.

It was a bright and sunny day

Sorry from my prolonged absence, I was away every weekend during the past three weeks and I normally take photos on weekends. But today was a bright and glorious day so I snapped some shots on the way to work. Here's a view of St Martin's church basking in sunlight.

Unexpected Christmas invasion

Christmas unexpectedly invaded Liège today, bringing with it enormous snowflakes and the distant sound of sleigh bells. The invasion only lasted for 10 minutes but it was impressive. Shock and awe!

Church, snowy roof and a bit of sky

Sorry excuse for a Skywatch this week, but I didn't have anything better.

The organ

This is a view of the front of the organ of Saint Denis. Very impressive.

DSCF2110

This is a view of the back. Much less impressive.

And this is the engine. Somebody had to work the pedals in order to pressurise air while the organist played. Sadly, the entire organ is not used any more, they have a small electric organ instead...

For whom the bell tolls

That's the big bell at the top of Saint Denis. I rang it!

Shadows on the wall

More photos from inside the tower of Saint Denis. As you may have guessed, the shadow with the camera is mine!

From the inside

First couple of photos from my trip up the tower of the Saint Denis church. The first shows the upper side of the roof of the original romanesque building. It features three domes that are now completely covered by the newer roof.

The second photo shows the wooden beams that make up the newer roof. It is not that new, one of these beams dates from 1028AD!
