Failed Watery Wednesday

I was going to post this photo as a Watery Wednesday contribution but there's not been one this week. Nevertheless, it's Wednesday and there's water in the photo.

River creatures in the fog

The Pont de Fragnée is decorated with two sculptures at each end, holding up the pillars. They're symbolising the 'Old river' and the 'New river'. I don't know which one is which. They look good in the fog though!

The fog

Diving is always underwater

Here's some action shots! A strut fell off the footbridge into the Meuse today. We happened to pass by the moment a maintenance team arrived to rake it out. Two people dived while another five (and later seven) looked on.

Then the divers unhooked the strut from a cable that was preventing it from sinking.

Finally, they tied a rope to it and the dry members of the team pulled it out. Job's a good'un.

Sunny Skywatch

The grey skies were back today so here's a couple of pictures from yesterday's glorious morning. The Pont de Fragnée angels are announcing the coming of the sun!

Happy New Year's Eve!

Well, it's the end of 2009, the end of the noughties, our third New Year's Eve since we moved to Liège and our second New Year's Eve since I started this blog. There's plenty more Liège blogging to come in 2010. I wish you all the best for the New Year and the new decade.

Incidentally, the fireworks photo is from July 2008. With a bit of luck, I will post much fresher fireworks tomorrow!

Fog on the river

Recently, the river has been bringing down a lot of fog in the morning. This is what the Pont de Fragnée looks like on such occasions.

For this week's Watery Wednesday I am posting yesterday's water fountain but without the steel ring sculpture. Keep it wet!

Time for a holiday

Tomorrow we're leaving on holidays to Greece. Liège City Daily Photo will be back in late August. In the meantime, here's a nice Liège sunset: the sky, the river, the footbridge, the old post office, it's all there.

Postwar symbolism

These are the statues decorating the Pont des Arches, a bridge in the city centre that was destroyed during the World War II and rebuilt in 1947. The Art Deco (almost Stalinist) statues symbolize the birth of Liège, the Middle Ages, the Belgian Revolution of 1830 and the resistance to the German occupation. Two of the statues are seen in this photo, the other two are on the other side of the bridge and have featured on a previous post. I am not sure which statue symbolizes what...
