Near the Citadel Hospital. Notice the frozen empty water bottle.

Hôpital de la Citadelle
A wintry view of the Citadel Hospital on the Citadel Hill. The fort that gave the hill its name does not exist any more, it was replaced by this hospital.

Bois du Sart Tilman
Here's two pictures I took a couple of weeks ago in the Sart Tilman woods, when there was still snow everywhere. The university campus is situated on the Sart Tilman hill. This was the view from my office window.

Saint Martin et Sainte Croix
Two churches for the price of one. On the hill on the left is Saint Martin's basilica while on the right in the forground you can see the church of the Holy Cross. In most views of Liège you can see a minimum of two churches.

Eglise Saint Vincent
This is a photo of the dome the Saint Vincent church. The church is situated on the site of an older Saint Vincent, which was demolished to make way for the Universal Expo of 1905. The current church was built after the end of the Expo during the reconstruction of the area. The water feature lies in the Meuse river.

Fragnée in the Skywatch
The Fragnée bridge under a clear morning sky. The viewing angle is similar to a previous photo I posted here but the lighting is radically different.

Les drapeaux des Chiroux
Europe, Belgium, the Province of Liège and Wallonia (right to left) flutter alongside each other and play with the reflected sunlight. We have many flags and many governments in Liège...

Icy leaves
This picture is 10 days old, that's why there's still ice on the leaves. It's all melted away now...

Reflected sunrise
Sorry about this, I couldn't help it. I promise that this is the last of the sunrise mini-series. In this one, the sky is reflected in a shop window that is still celebrating Christmas. The building in the background is the mirror image of the building in yesterday's photo.

Another Friday, another Skywatch
Sunrise by the river. This photo is from the same series as the Pont de Fragnée pics I posted a couple of days ago. I must admit that I like the series very much and I just had to post one more. Those of you revolted by this repetition can get their fix of original Skywatch photos here.

Le Pont de Fragnée
The angels on two of the pillars of the Pont de Fragnée bridge herald the coming day.
It is the most beautiful bridge in Liège. It was built for the Exposition Universelle of 1905, blown up by the Belgian army in WWII to slow down the speed of the German advance and rebuilt exactly like the original after the war. Here's a detail of a water-bearer sculpture and a lamppost silhouetted against the sunrise and accompanied by traffic lights, electric pillars and factory chimneys.

Meltdown postponed
The meltdown that was supposed to hit our region over the weekend has been delayed. It will arrive on Wednesday apparently... In the meantime, here's some more snowy, icy photos from the Citadel Hill.

Skywatch Friday
Here's my first Skywatch Friday post. A view of the sky over an icy Liège from the Citadel Hill, complete with two aircraft contrails. The Monument du 14ème de Ligne frames it on the left.

Snowy campus
The snow is still around. Apparently, we are going through the worse spell of wintery weather since 1996. The temperatures are constantly below zero (Celsius) and the snow is accompanied by sleet, ice, freezing fogs and other calamities. Here's the wind tunnel laboratory of the University of Liege in the snow.

Pont des Arches
Another bridge by night photo, this time of the Pont des Arches with its Art Deco figureheads. It was taken just before the New Year's fireworks, hence the people watching the river.

Winter is back
It never really went away but it turned snowy yesterday night and this morning. The low temperatures did not allow the snow to melt, causing traffic chaos. Even St Dennis' crucified Jesus looked vulnerable in this weather.

Christmas leftovers
Headless carcasses, empty cardboard boxes, spilled beer and New Year's hangovers. The holidays are almost over...

Happy New Year!
Happy 2009 to everyone and may your wildest dreams come true! Here's a couple of pictures from the New Year's fireworks display organized by the city on the Citadel Hill.
