This week we have 'la fête du commerce' in the city centre, a kind of large street market; most of the city centre shops participate and there's various sideshows and brass bands and all manner of festive activities and merrymaking. Mirth and jollity abound and shopping is being done in large quantities.

Cité Administrative
Unfortunately, this is our City Hall. Does anybody know what the black pattern on the side is supposed to represent (other than a final touch of ugliness on an already despicable construction)?

Protest!
Yesterday I heard and saw these people protesting in the city centre. I have no idea who they are or what they were protesting against. There's a bus drivers' strike on at the moment but I don't think they look like bus drivers... If anybody knows who they were please leave a comment.

City walls
This is all that remains of the once proud city fortifications. A few bits of wall here and there in the woods of the citadel hill.

View from the top
Liège in all its architectural madness. A complete history of 300 years of architecture thrown together haphazardly, inconsistently and ... Well, the city does have its charms. They're well hidden.

Flowers on the hill
Another photo from the Terrasses des Minimes. Liège in the background provides a nice contrast to the flower.

Another kitty
Here's another kitty pic. I spotted this one in a ground floor window, next to a sculpted head and a flower pot. It was calmly gazing at the passers by.

Crucified graffiti
Who said that sci-fi graffiti and a statue of Jesus Christ crucified don't go together? In Liège they do!

Ancienne Eglise Saint André
As some of you have commented, Liege has quite a lot of churches. Which is why this particular St Andrew's church is not a church any more.

Terrasses des Minimes
One of the best kept secrets of the city is the Terrasses des Minimes et des Chevaliers Teutoniques, a series of terraces on the side of the Citadel Hill. Once they belonged to a monastic order but now they are a beautiful public park. Here's a couple of pictures.

Arty graffiti
Here's some original graffiti/installation on a wall in the Rue Hors Château. I think it reads 'Laisse-moi t'aimer' (let me love you) and it is written mostly in plastic doll parts.

You are being judged
First of all I will apologize for the infrequent updates this week, I was away in Norway. I could only update the blog with older photos when I was not getting lost in fjords, chasing trolls or preparing conference presentations.
Here is a picture of three bishop princes from the Palais des Princes Eveques. It is quite clear that they are watching our every move and disapproving of pretty much everything we do. His Central Holiness appears to be saying that time to change our ways is short while Monsignor Left is holding the means by which divine powers will act their terrible vengeance upon us.
PS: All pictures on this blog can be seen at much higher resolution when clicked on. Some of the comments left recently made me suspect that this is not entirely clear. So please click on the picture and see the Their Three Holinesses in their full high res glory.

Churches
Saint Paul's cathedral and the Basilique de Cointe, both in one shot. The Basilique is in the background.
